Episode 80: That’s What Friends Are For

That’s What Friends Are For, by Kenneth Sean Campbell is a novel set in San Francisco during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. It’s a book that will inspire you, and cause you to think and it will also make you cry. Kenneth based the book on actual events from his life as a recovering alcoholic and a gay man during this painful time in our history.

Alcoholics Anonymous plays a central role in the novel and Kenneth does a superb job capturing the essence of the Fellowship. When the AIDS epidemic started it seemed to come out of nowhere and people were dying quickly. A person would be diagnosed one week and gone the next. The gay community in Alcoholics Anonymous was hit hard and San Francisco was ground zero. This book brilliantly illustrates the strong bonds that were formed during that time.

In this podcast, Kenneth shares his story and relates it to the characters in the book. It’s a fascinating conversation that will hopefully serve as an archive, a record of this important time in the history of AA.
